Western North Carolina Mission Trip Day 1: A Little Sore, A Lot of Heart

Wow! What a day!
It’s Monday around 5:00pm as I write this. Yesterday was a long travel day, but the whole group is here in Black Mountain. Last night we enjoyed some fellowship time together…and games (Joe Hayes keeps winning!!). The group also put up with their Detroit Lions football pastor who had to watch the Lions lose.
But today was the start of the hard work. Bright and early we set out for our worksite. We are working on a house that has already been built but has a lot of work to do inside.
So here is the breakdown of the day…
Sand
Rest
Mud
Rest
Mud
Rest
And tomorrow we get to repeat all this. It’s groundhogs’ day here. We are a little sore, a little tired, but full of heart.
This week the team is going to be focusing on the fruits of the spirit. Today’s “fruit” is love. Tonight we will talk and pray together about our first impressions and how we can continue to build unity as a team. There is so much to love out here. Not only is the area one of those thin spaces where you feel peace on a different level, but we are loving the opportunity to give back to this amazing community. It’s so wild to see that even after 2 years since the hurricane there is so much to be done. So many people are still rebuilding homes and rebuilding their lives.
We appreciate your prayers as we journey this time together.
If you want to follow along with our devotions, I encourage you today to reflect back on where you saw love today. Where could you have been more loving?
Until tomorrow…I’m going to sign off. Our amazing chefs (James and Matt) are cooking something that smells delicious…I must go investigate!
We love you all.
Joyfully,
Emma
